An Unusual Visitor

Sanita bought along a skink to school today. She had found it in her Dad's gumboot!
We have had a look at different types of lizards. Skinks and Geckos are similar but Geckos have frog-like eyes.
Our visitor was the common Skink. Click here for information about it. We may look at developing a habitat for skinks next year. (A definite if Jackson has anything to do with it!!)

The wonders of Baking Soda!

We had a serious look at Sodium bicarbonate or Baking Soda today. We knew that when mixed with vinegar, it froths up but were not sure why.
We've found out that when it gets mixed with something a bit acidy there is a chemical reaction and the baking soda gives off Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in bubbles.
This cool reaction happened when we mixed the baking soda to a melted golden syrup mixture (which is slightly acidic). This carbon dioxide gas, which formed when the baking soda was mixed with the boiling golden syrup enlarged, creating little air pockets in the hokey pokey. Very yummy too!

Sports Drinks vs Weetbix!

Magnify glass

Which is a better recovery fuel?
We set up a fair test by selecting 6 fit athletes to run our cross country course for 15 minutes. Three of them then had a glass of ‘Mizone’ while the other three had a bowl of 2 weetbix with milk and a bit of sugar.
We then recorded how they felt recovered 10 minutes later.
One hour later we repeated the test, only this time the athletes who had the ‘Mizone’ had the weetbix and those who had the weetbix had the ‘mizone’.
Here are our results:

The result was unanimous! Everyone felt better recovered after the weetbix!
Special thanks to our athletes: Magnus, Andre, Henry, Leanne, Flynn, and Reilly
Thanks also to our scientists: Jai, Shanyn, Nasan, Teniel, Amali, and Brittany. And to our kitchen staff: Louise, Sanita, and Jackson

Healthy Lunch

Magnify glass
We had a look at our lunches, and whether they were healthy or not. We read through the nutrition facts on the packaging. Some things are fine if we have them just as treats once in a while.

We also talked about packaging and what would have been biodegradable or not.
